Almost two years after her father was gunned down while driving along a Birmingham, Alabama, road with two of his young children, his now-4-year-old daughter has died from injuries sustained in the subsequent accident.
Four-year-old Madison Grace Davis passed away in June, her family confirmed on a GoFundMe page last week. Her relative, Tiffany Davis, shared on the fundraising page that Madison had “suffered from a traumatic brain injury” due to the incident. “Despite her incredible strength and courageous battle, she has now left us, and our hearts are shattered,” Davis wrote.
Madison’s father, Demarkus Etwan Moss, Sr., was driving with his children along Arkadelphia Road shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022, when someone in a nearby car “began firing shots into his vehicle,” according to a Birmingham police press release at the time.
Struck by gunfire, Moss continued driving for about half a mile before colliding with another vehicle. Responding officers found Moss slumped over the wheel, “suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.” Moss, who was targeted in the shooting, was pronounced dead at the scene.
First responders discovered his then two-year-old daughter, Madison, “unresponsive” in the vehicle. Her infant brother was not seriously injured in the crash. Madison and the injured occupants of the other vehicle were rushed to various hospitals. Madison was subsequently released from the hospital but was later readmitted due to complications, AL.com reported. After the accident, the little girl never talked or walked again.
An online tribute to Moss mentioned that he had four children and was affectionately known by the nickname “Bobo.” One commenter on the page wrote, “I pray for the kids to be okay after all this.”
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates of the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE that Madison died on Tuesday, June 25, at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. The cause and manner of her death have not yet been confirmed.
Following the shooting, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin took to social media, pleading for leads in the unsolved case. “I’m tired of these cowards hurting our children,” the mayor wrote. “Enough.”
The tragic sequence of events has left a family grieving deeply, as they continue to seek justice for both Demarkus Moss and Madison Grace Davis. The community’s response has been one of sorrow and support, as they rally around the surviving family members during this incredibly difficult time.
