A 6-year-old California girl, Scarlett Corona, is battling for her life after being mauled by two pit bulls last weekend. The incident occurred while she was at her grandmother’s house in Ontario, according to her cousin Valerie Hernandez and her mother Starr Aranda, who shared details on a GoFundMe page.
Scarlett was playing outside her grandmother’s house when the pit bulls attacked her. Aranda was en route to dinner when she received the devastating news about her daughter. “I didn’t know what kind of condition, I just knew,” Aranda told NBC 4. “They said, ‘Get to the hospital. Your baby girl got bit by a dog.’”
The vicious attack left Scarlett with severe injuries, including a severed main artery in her leg, cuts on both legs, and at least three bites to her back, Aranda shared with NBC 4. “Scarlett was flown to a children’s trauma center and is now undergoing various surgical procedures that will be followed by months of therapy and treatments,” the GoFundMe page states.
The oldest of four children, Scarlett “is so full of life, very strong and loving,” the fundraiser describes. “She helps her mommy and daddy so much as the big sister. We ask for prayers as they go through this traumatic experience. Your kindness, prayers, and generosity mean the world to our family and any donation will be appreciated beyond words.”
On July 18, Hernandez provided an update on the GoFundMe page, writing that Scarlett “has proven to be a fighter and is staying strong,” noting that the girl had undergone an operation to reconstruct her ear and another to repair the artery in her left leg.
“We remain strong for my warrior princess while she battles the odds,” the fundraiser reads.
The Ontario Police Department is investigating the attack, NBC 4 reports. It remains unclear who owns the dogs or if charges are pending.
