In the early hours of Sunday, August 18, a Houston woman was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle outside a nightclub. The incident occurred at 2300 San Jacinto St., and details emerging from the Houston Police Department (HPD) paint a disturbing picture.

According to witnesses at the scene, a driver identified as Sanden James George, 35, had been involved in a “physical altercation” with another woman. Police allege that George appeared to attempt to “intentionally strike” this woman with his vehicle, a spokesperson for the HPD told PEOPLE.

Instead of targeting the intended individual, George’s vehicle struck and killed a 41-year-old woman who was an innocent bystander, say authorities. The incident unfolded shortly after 3 a.m. when police first responded to a report of an auto-pedestrian crash near the nightclub.

HPD’s statement detailed the sequence of events: “An initial investigation, evidence from the scene, and witness statements determined a male suspect got into a physical altercation with a woman, 24, before attempting to intentionally strike her with his vehicle.” Fortunately, the 24-year-old woman involved in the altercation was not seriously injured, according to police.

The statement further revealed that after hitting the victim, George fled the scene on foot. He was later apprehended and treated at a local hospital before being taken into police custody. George faces charges of murder and assault on a family member.

The identity of the deceased victim is still pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. This tragic event has left the local community in shock and mourning, highlighting the dire consequences of reckless and intentional acts of violence.
