Meghan Markle Addresses ‘Overshadowing’ Accusations with Heartfelt Bookstore Anecdote: ‘The Safety of What I Was Craving’

Amid recent criticisms that she and Prince Harry attempted to overshadow Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle has made her first public statement on the matter, focusing instead on the solace she finds in bookstores.

The Duchess of Sussex faced backlash after a promotional teaser for Harry’s upcoming Netflix documentary was released just hours after Kate shared a poignant video about her journey with cancer. Critics, including Piers Morgan, pointed out the timing of the teaser’s release, noting it was just “100 minutes” after Kate’s heartfelt video.

Despite the criticism, Meghan seemed unbothered by the accusations. Instead, she reflected on the comfort she finds in bookstores, recalling a discreet visit she made to New York five years ago. Meghan had traveled to the city to support her friend Serena Williams at the U.S. Open and took the opportunity to visit the bookstore Godmothers in Montecito, California, reported Marie Claire.

During her visit, Meghan wore a cap and maintained a low profile to avoid being recognized. She described the experience as significant, stating, “For me, sneaking to New York five years ago was a really big deal. I was still so uncomfortable being out in the world. The safety of what I was craving, I knew I could find in a bookstore.”

In her statement, Meghan expressed her gratitude to the bookstore’s founder, saying, “Thank you for not just creating the space, but for holding the space for so many people to feel seen through the pages, either in laughter, in grief, in feeling less alone.”

This heartfelt reflection comes as the Sussexes continue to navigate the public’s scrutiny and the ongoing discussion about their media activities in relation to other royal figures.
