Democrat President Joe Biden’s campaign has lashed out at Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump for falsely claiming credit for reducing insulin prices, an achievement that Biden himself frequently highlights. Over the weekend, Trump inaccurately asserted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he was responsible for lowering the cost of insulin for millions of Americans, according to Raw Story.
“Low INSULIN PRICING was gotten for millions of Americans by me, and the Trump Administration, not by Crooked Joe Biden,” Trump wrote Saturday in a bizarre Truth Social post. “He had NOTHING to do with it. It was all done long before he so sadly entered office. All he does is try to take credit for things done by others, in this case, ME!”
The Biden campaign swiftly responded to Trump’s claims. “A desperate and delusional Trump tries to take credit for President Biden’s historic law lowering insulin costs,” Biden-Harris HQ wrote on X, formerly Twitter. They slammed Trump with a screenshot of his Truth Social post marked with a giant red cross. “FACT CHECK: This is a blatant lie. Trump did not cap insulin costs, President Biden did for seniors through the Inflation Reduction Act.
Trump’s Project 2025 wants to repeal it, which would raise insulin costs for over a million Americans,” the campaign added. As the November election draws near, healthcare remains a critical issue for voters, and Trump trails Biden significantly on this front. A May study by the independent health policy research group KFF found that Biden led Trump by 11 points on the issue of guaranteeing access to affordable healthcare. Insulin price limitations have become a central element of Biden’s broader economic message against Trump on the campaign trail.
Under the Inflation Reduction Act, Biden introduced measures aimed at reducing medical costs for seniors, including capping the cost of insulin for Medicare beneficiaries at $35 per month. Biden has also pushed for a more extensive insulin cap that would benefit younger citizens. “Instead of paying $400 a month for insulin, seniors with diabetes only have to pay $35 a month!” Biden said at his State of the Union address in March. “And now I want to cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month for every American who needs it!”
Throughout his presidency, Trump made numerous attempts to repeal the Obama-era Affordable Care Act but failed to provide a viable alternative. According to a White House estimate from March, the ACA provides health insurance coverage to about 45 million Americans. On the 2024 campaign trail, Trump reiterated his promise to replace Obamacare but has yet to detail what that replacement would entail.
The battle over healthcare policies continues to be a significant point of contention as both candidates vie for the support of voters concerned about medical costs and accessibility.
