A UK doctor, Dr. Ahmed, renowned for his educational content as @dra_says on TikTok, has shared his insights on treating acute sinusitis. Highlighting that sinusitis is “a problem everyone seems to have at the moment,” Dr. Ahmed offered practical advice while debunking myths about the condition, commonly caused by swelling of the sinuses.

Dr. Ahmed began by explaining the origins of sinusitis and the “chronic cough” often linked to it. “It’s almost always caused by a viral infection rather than a bacterial one,” he stated. Contrary to popular belief, he clarified that a green-yellow-brown nasal discharge does not necessarily indicate a bacterial infection. “This actually is very common in a viral infection as well,” he added.

Symptoms of sinusitis can linger, lasting seven to ten days and sometimes up to four weeks for complete recovery. Dr. Ahmed noted that bacterial infections may develop if a viral infection persists and leads to severe inflammation.

For managing symptoms, over-the-counter remedies can be effective. “The best treatment for this is saline nasal washes, decongestants, and anti-inflammatories,” he advised. He also addressed the post-nasal drip that can cause a persistent cough, particularly at night. “This is where all the inflammation and the gunk from your sinuses goes to the back of your throat and this causes a cough,” he explained.

Sinusitis, often following a cold or flu, presents symptoms such as pain, swelling, and tenderness around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead, a blocked or runny nose, a reduced sense of smell, and green or yellow mucus. Additional symptoms include headaches, toothaches, bad breath, and a feeling of pressure in the ears. The NHS recommends treating sinusitis at home by resting, staying hydrated, avoiding smoking and allergens, and using saline nasal solutions. Pharmacists can provide saltwater nasal sprays or decongestants for relief.

However, Dr. Ahmed and NHS guidelines urge individuals to consult a GP if symptoms persist beyond three weeks, worsen significantly, or fail to improve with painkillers. Seeking medical advice is essential if sinusitis recurs frequently or causes severe discomfort.

Dr. Ahmed’s educational video serves as a timely reminder to address sinusitis symptoms with proper care while being mindful of common misconceptions.
