The prevalence of head and neck tumours is rising rapidly, with experts urging people to recognize early warning signs to safeguard their health. According to Dr. Jiri Kubes, medical director at the Proton Therapy Center, these types of cancer are becoming “one of the world’s fastest-growing,” particularly among younger individuals.

Head and neck tumours can develop in over 30 areas, including the tongue, voice box, throat, and sinuses. In the UK alone, an estimated 12,000 people are diagnosed with these cancers each year. According to Cancer Research charities, this represents a 30% increase since the 1990s. Dr. Kubes attributes part of this surge to the HPV infection, which often presents no symptoms, making early detection more challenging.

Describing the rise in virus-induced cancers as a “worrying trend,” Dr. Kubes stressed the importance of early diagnosis, which significantly improves treatment outcomes. “Some of the early head and neck cancer symptoms can easily be mistaken for other common ailments, so it’s important to be aware of any changes to your body and address any concerns,” he said.

Key early warning signs include:

  • A sore throat lasting more than two weeks
  • Sore gums or painful teeth
  • Ulcers or white and red patches in the mouth
  • Swelling in the neck or resistance when touching certain areas
  • Persistent ear blockage or earache

Dr. Kubes emphasized that while these symptoms don’t always indicate cancer, they shouldn’t be ignored. “It’s vital that if you suspect something is not right, you see your doctor,” he advised.

The stakes of early detection are high. If caught in its initial stages, head and neck cancer survival rates can reach up to 90%. However, late-stage diagnoses can see survival rates drop dramatically to around 40%.

Dr. Kubes’s warning comes at a time when awareness is crucial to combating the increasing incidence of these cancers. Recognizing early signs and seeking prompt medical attention can make a life-saving difference for those at risk.
