A Georgia father who denied responsibility for his infant son’s tragic death has been contradicted by autopsy findings that reveal a disturbing case of fatal neglect.
Jerry Chambers Jr., 21, was arrested in January after his three-month-old son, Joshua, was found dead inside a Travelodge hotel room in College Park, Georgia. Chambers claimed he discovered his baby unresponsive and “foaming at the mouth” upon returning to their room, according to an affidavit obtained by WSB-TV.
Chambers told police that he had attempted to resuscitate Joshua, but the baby remained unresponsive. He said he had left the child alone in the hotel room while he went to work, but the investigation quickly revealed troubling inconsistencies in his account.
Authorities allege that instead of contacting emergency services, Chambers left the unresponsive child behind and checked into another hotel with a friend. Upon returning later and finding Joshua still unresponsive, Chambers reportedly packed a bag and again failed to seek help.
Police say it wasn’t until two days after initially discovering the baby in distress that Chambers finally sought assistance. By then, it was too late — the infant had died, and the circumstances surrounding his death raised immediate red flags.
Following the January 28 discovery, Chambers was charged with murder and child cruelty, reports the Express US.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner has since released autopsy results that confirm suspicions of neglect. The cause of death was ruled as “dehydration and undernourishment due to infant neglect,” and the manner of death was classified as homicide, WSB-TV reported.
These findings directly challenge Chambers’ claims and paint a heartbreaking picture of the baby’s final days. The report underscores that Joshua’s death was not sudden or unpreventable, but the result of prolonged suffering and inadequate care.
Chambers is currently being held at the Fulton County Jail, with bail set at $150,000. His case has reignited conversations around child welfare, especially concerning vulnerable families staying in temporary housing or struggling with stability.
As the legal proceedings continue, officials emphasize the grave consequences of parental neglect and the importance of timely action in child emergencies — a response Joshua tragically never received.
