A Detroit woman is facing multiple felony charges in connection with a tragic crash that claimed the lives of two pedestrians last week. Authorities say the victims, a man and woman, were fatally struck while waiting at a bus stop.

Dejah Latre Berry, 33, has been charged with two counts of reckless driving causing death and two counts of driving with a license suspended, revoked, or denied causing death, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The charges stem from a crash that occurred on April 25 in the area of Evergreen Road and Fenkell Avenue on Detroit’s west side.

Prosecutors allege Berry was driving at a high rate of speed on Evergreen Road when she lost control of the vehicle, veered across multiple lanes, and slammed into the victims, identified as 43-year-old Kwasi Agbottah and 41-year-old Elizabeth Agbottah. The couple was standing at the bus stop when they were struck. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to their injuries, as CBS News reported.

Berry was arraigned on Monday and received a $50,000 cash or surety bond. As part of the bond conditions, she must wear a GPS tether and remain under house arrest pending further court proceedings. In a strongly worded statement, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy condemned the alleged reckless behavior that led to the fatal crash.

“I really do not know what else can be said about drivers driving like there are no rules of the road and thinking they can drive anyway they want to drive. That allegedly happened in this case, and now two innocent people at a bus stop are dead,” Worthy said to WXYZ.

The deadly incident has reignited public concerns about reckless driving and traffic safety across the city, particularly in areas where pedestrians are vulnerable. A bond redetermination hearing for Berry is scheduled for April 30, followed by a probable cause hearing on May 7 and a preliminary examination set for May 14.

If convicted, Berry could face significant prison time for each of the four felony charges. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the exact speed of the vehicle and whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.

Community members are mourning the loss of the Agbottahs, remembered as a devoted couple whose lives were cut short in a senseless act of negligence. “Above all, Elizabeth and Kwasi were committed, intentional parents who fostered in their children a love of community, discipleship, and caring for God’s creation,” a GoFundMe set up for the children reads.
