Trump’s Midterm Obsession: ‘He Knows What Happens If We Lose the House’

With the 2026 midterm elections still over a year away, Donald Trump is already heavily involved in shaping the Republican Party’s strategy to retain control of both chambers of Congress. According to a recent Politico report, the president has two major reasons to ensure the GOP does not lose seats in the upcoming election—one of which centers on preventing Democrats from regaining control of the House.

Trump’s motivation is clear: the prospect of a Democratic-led House would likely result in a flurry of investigations into his ongoing activities, reminiscent of the probes that dominated much of his first term. Politico’s Rachel Bade states that Trump is “deeply motivated by his desire to avoid suffering through dozens of new investigations and a third potential impeachment.”

A source close to the situation shared with Politico, “He knows what happens if we lose the House,” referencing the growing number of impeachment proposals already circulating among Democratic lawmakers. These fears have pushed Trump to take a more active role in the GOP’s midterm efforts earlier than most.

In what’s being described as “Trump’s midterm obsession,” the former president has begun backing more moderate Republicans facing tough re-election bids in districts that Democrats view as winnable. By offering early endorsements, Trump aims to avoid messy primary battles that could drain critical resources from the general election.

His strategy includes making recruitment calls to other Republicans and using his political influence to ensure the party’s success in 2026. Additionally, Trump has been focusing on fundraising efforts, raising significant amounts of money to support GOP candidates in the upcoming midterms.

Trump’s early involvement is a reflection of his desire to maintain a firm grip on the GOP and ensure that a Democratic victory in the House doesn’t turn into a political nightmare. His efforts to shape the 2026 election, long before it heats up, highlight the high stakes for both parties as they prepare for a crucial political battle.
