Former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, shifting from hosting traditional charity galas to becoming a hub for gatherings aligned with the far-right MAGA movement. This change has not only reshaped the club’s events calendar but also boosted its financial fortunes, as reported by The New York Times and echoed by Mediaite.

According to reports, Mar-a-Lago saw a remarkable rise in profitability, generating $22 million in net profit in 2022 alone. This surge in earnings stands out, particularly when compared to Trump’s other properties. The club’s initiation fee skyrocketed from $100,000 in 2016 to $600,000 by 2022, a move that has contributed substantially to Trump’s financial gains, considering Mar-a-Lago’s approximately 500 members.

Before Trump’s entry into politics, Mar-a-Lago was renowned for hosting extravagant charity events, with political activities being a rarity. In the 2014–2015 season, for instance, the club hosted 52 fundraisers, of which only one was political. However, political dynamics shifted notably after Trump’s controversial remarks in 2017, leading many non-political charities to distance themselves from Mar-a-Lago.

In their place, events catering to the far-right and conspiracy-theory communities began to dominate the club’s schedule. Notably, Turning Point USA, known for its conservative activism on college campuses and Christian nationalism, began hosting its annual event at Mar-a-Lago in 2018.

Since leaving office, Trump has continued to wield influence over Mar-a-Lago’s political landscape. The club has become a gathering place for figures associated with the MAGA movement, including election deniers and participants in the Capitol riot. The Times identified 130 individuals who have attended multiple events at Mar-a-Lago, many of whom have received Trump’s endorsement in their political endeavors.

Despite the club’s transformation, Trump has occasionally attempted to downplay its political role. In a fundraiser in March 2022, he remarked, “We don’t do too many of these things at Mar-a-Lago…I don’t want to make it a totally political place.” However, the club’s shift in focus and membership composition reflect its evolving role as a focal point for Trump’s political base.

As Mar-a-Lago continues to navigate its new identity, from a venue of elite charity galas to a magnet for MAGA supporters, the financial gains and political implications remain intertwined with Trump’s legacy and ongoing influence in conservative circles.
