Ben Affleck recently gave fans an intimate and emotional window into his personal life during a visit to the Criterion Closet — and it’s resonating with audiences everywhere. While selecting films for his collection, the Accountant 2 star paused when he came across David Lynch’s 1980 classic The Elephant Man, sharing a deeply personal story tied to the film.

“This is the first and only time I ever saw my father cry,” Affleck said, visibly moved as he picked up the film.

The movie, which stars John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins, explores themes of humanity and compassion — themes that clearly struck a chord with Affleck. “It’s a movie about what it means to be a human being. And it’s heartbreaking and beautiful and… it’s tied to a very personal memory for me,” he continued to People.

After gently placing the DVD into his bag, Affleck softly concluded, “That’s probably a good note to end on,” marking the emotional high point of his visit.

Affleck’s relationship with his father, Timothy, has been one of growth and reflection over the years. After his parents, Timothy and Christine Anne “Chris” Boldt, separated when Ben was just 12, Timothy moved to California. Their relationship continued to evolve, with Ben speaking candidly in interviews about their journey.

In a 2020 interview with People, Affleck praised his father’s strength, noting that Timothy had celebrated 30 years of sobriety. His words reflected a deep understanding that comes with age and experience. “Part of being an adult is learning that your parents are just people. They’re not perfect. They were just doing their best. As a child, we expect perfection out of our parents,” he said.

Professionally, Affleck is keeping busy. He stars and produces The Accountant 2, alongside Jon Bernthal, with direction by Gavin O’Connor and a script by Bill Dubuque. The film is already generating buzz in theaters.

Looking ahead, fans can catch him in the upcoming film Animals with Gillian Anderson and in RIP, where he’ll once again join forces with longtime collaborator Matt Damon.

Through it all, Affleck continues to balance his public life with quiet, heartfelt moments — like this rare reflection — that remind fans of the man behind the movie star.
