President Joe Biden addressed the nation following a failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, revealing details of his conversation with Trump and expressing his relief at Trump’s safety.
In a live televised speech, Biden disclosed that he had spoken to Trump, describing their conversation as “short but good.” He stated, “I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.”
Biden, who was briefed by Secret Services on Saturday night immediately after the incident, added, “Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
During his press conference, Biden also paid tribute to Corey Comperatore, the 50-year-old victim who was tragically killed during the incident. Speaking for the second time since the shooting, the 81-year-old president reiterated, “We must unite as one nation. That is who we are.”
The attempted assassination occurred on Saturday, July 13, when Trump was holding a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Approximately six minutes into his speech, gunfire erupted, and Trump was shot in the ear. The former president, visibly injured with blood on his face and ear, quickly crouched for cover before being whisked away by Secret Service agents.
The 78-year-old was immediately transported from the rally in a motorcade while law enforcement secured the area. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by law enforcement agents. His body was later found on a nearby rooftop. Crooks, who used an AR-style rifle in the attack, was a resident of Bethel Park, a village in Pennsylvania about 40 miles south of Butler.
Matthew Crooks, the father of the gunman, told CNN that he was trying to understand what had happened and would wait to speak to law enforcement before making further comments. Following the attack, Trump received treatment at a hospital before being released and flying back to New Jersey late on Saturday night. Photos showed him disembarking from a plane with a bandage on his ear.
Members of Trump’s family have since issued statements expressing shock and horror over the events. Melania Trump, the former First Lady, extended her condolences to those affected by the violence. In her statement, she praised her husband’s personal qualities, including his “love of music.”
She said, “To the families of the innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, I humbly offer my sincerest sympathy. Your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me. A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald’s passion – his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration. The core facets of my husband’s life – his human side – were buried below the political machine.”
