President-elect Donald Trump hasn’t yet chosen any Black Republicans to serve in his cabinet, and ABC News reports that some Black GOP operatives “feel left out” by it.
The operatives, who all chose to remain anonymous, were discouraged that Trump had given his highest profile cabinet picks so far to mostly white allies, although Trump tapped Latino Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) to be his secretary of state.
One Republican who spoke with ABC said they would not be pleased if Trump stashed a token Black ally at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), as he did in his first term with Ben Carson.
“Why is every Black person given HUD?” they asked rhetorically, before adding that it was “the literal Black job of the administration.”
Another Black Republican told ABC that they were surprised Trump hadn’t diversified picks for positions like assistant to the president, barring what they implied was one regrettable choice during his first term.
“I do think if you’re really talking about Black influence inside the White House, does Trump want his only legacy of having the only AP for two terms be Omarosa?” one Black Republican strategist asked.
Another Black Republican complained that he felt too intimidated by left-wing trolls to publicly recommend Black Republicans who could serve in Trump’s administration.
“I can’t tweet that we need more Black conservatives because the left will attack me saying it’s a DEI hire,” they said.
