Princeton Nicholas Jones, 9, died from a gunshot wound in Los Angeles on November 30. The following day, police arrested his father, Nicholas Jones, 32, and charged him with his son’s murder. The deadly shooting reportedly occurred at Princeton’s grandfather’s home in Compton. Now his mother wants justice for her son.
Creole Green created a GoFundMe account and wrote that her son was a beacon of joy whose life ended “far too soon.” Investigators are trying to determine what led to the deadly shooting.
Police responded to a call about a person shot.
According to CBS News, deputies from Compton Sheriff’s Station arrived at the scene in the 15000 block of South Haskins, around 7:30 p.m. November 30. Deputies found Princeton unresponsive in the backyard. Officials pronounced him dead on the scene from an apparent gunshot wound. ABC 7 reported that police looked at Nicholas Jones as a suspect.
Police arrested the father the next day.
CBS News reported that police arrested Nicholas Jones on charges of murder and child abuse resulting in death.
The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services issued a statement obtained by the news station:
“While we understand the public’s interest in children from the community who may have received supportive services from DCFS, state law prohibits us from commenting on our possible involvement with families. Confidentiality laws protect children and families from emotional distress and stigmatization while complex family issues are resolved.”
The news rocked the community.
The city released a statement. “The city of Compton mourns the loss of the 9-year-old boy who was killed on Saturday evening in West Rancho Dominguez. Our hearts go out to the family as they cope with this tremendous loss. We encourage anyone with more information to call the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department at (310) 605-6500,” it reads, according to ABC 7.
Green told the news station she wanted the best for her son. “My goal was to give him the proper teachings and all the things that he needed in order to navigate this world independently one day,” she said. “I’m just devastated that my son’s life. … the door was shut in front of him at nine years old.”
Princeton’s mother misses him tremendously.
Green wrote on the GoFundMe page that she and Princeton, who was autistic, worked “tirelessly” to speak fluently by age 5. She called her son brilliant.
“We are heartbroken to share the tragic loss of Princeton Nicholas Jones, a bright, loving 9-year-old whose life was taken far too soon,” Green wrote on the page. “Born in 2015, Princeton was a truly special young man with a brilliant mind and a warm heart. Diagnosed with mild autism at the age of 2, Princeton worked tirelessly with the loving support of his mother and began speaking fluently by the age of 5.”
Loved ones have raised money for Princeton’s final expenses.
The GoFundMe has raised more than $40,000 of a $100,000 goal thus far. “Princeton was a beacon of joy, lighting up every room he entered with his humor and infectious smile. He was adored by his friends, family, and community, who all cherished the incredible person he was becoming,” his mother shared on the page.
