Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team is pushing for a mistrial in his ongoing sex trafficking case, arguing that the prosecution engaged in misconduct and introduced false testimony that could severely prejudice the jury.
In a letter submitted on June 7 to Judge Arun Subramanian, Combs’ attorneys claimed that the government relied on testimony it “knew or should have known was materially false,” particularly regarding a serious allegation involving model Bryana Bongolan and singer Cassie Ventura.
The letter centers on a reported 2016 incident, in which Combs allegedly dangled Bongolan from the balcony of Ventura’s apartment. Combs’ legal team insists this account is untrue and was wrongfully used to damage his character in court.
“The government has presented testimony that it knew or should have known was materially false related to its allegation that Mr. Combs dangled Bryana Bongolan from the balcony of Cassie Ventura’s apartment in September 2016,” the defense wrote.
They argue that this testimony painted an unfair and inflammatory picture of Combs, undermining his right to a fair trial. “Accordingly, to avoid an unfair conviction in this case the Court should grant a mistrial,” the legal team urged.
They further emphasized the emotional and psychological weight that the alleged incident carried in the courtroom, claiming it played a central role in shaping the jury’s perception of Combs. “The incident, as alleged, is disturbing and powerful evidence, and the government has used it to depict Mr. Combs in an extremely negative light, as an angry and dangerous man who terrified Ms. Ventura and her friends,” the team stated.
The defense’s request for a mistrial signals a high-stakes shift in Combs’ legal battle, suggesting they believe the trial has been irreparably tainted by the government’s use of this particular testimony.
As the case continues, Judge Subramanian will have to determine whether the prosecution’s presentation crossed the line into misconduct and whether it justifies throwing out the current proceedings.
