Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, 78, was hospitalized Monday with a fever, according to his deputy chief of staff, Angel Ureña. NBC News reports that the situation is not considered an emergency.

“President Clinton was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center for testing and observation after developing a fever,” Ureña said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving.”

A source close to Clinton described the situation as “not urgent,” explaining that the former president voluntarily sought medical attention after developing a fever. The source assured NBC that Clinton is “awake and alert” and emphasized, “He will be fine.”

Clinton’s fever is the latest in a series of health concerns. In 2004, he underwent a quadruple bypass surgery, followed by the insertion of two stents into a coronary artery in 2010. In 2021, he was hospitalized for six days due to a urological infection that spread to his bloodstream.

His recent hospitalization follows public concerns about his health after his appearance at the Democratic National Convention in August. Viewers noted his shaky hands and trembling voice, with some commenting on social media about his visibly aged demeanor. “Clinton looks way beyond his years. He is speaking slowly, raspy shaky voice… he has aged in every way,” one person wrote on X.

These observations came after Clinton joked about his age during the convention, acknowledging his advancing years. “I want to say this from the bottom of my heart, I have no idea how many more of these I’ll be able to come to. I started in ’76 and I’ve been to everyone since — no, ’72. Lord, I’m getting old,” he said.

Clinton, who turned 78 on August 19, also quipped, “The only personal vanity I want to assert is I’m still younger than Donald Trump,” referencing the Republican presidential nominee, who is also 78, born June 14.

Despite the health concerns, Clinton used the convention to pay tribute to President Joe Biden, praising his leadership and service. “I want to thank him for his courage, compassion, his class, his service, his sacrifice. He kept the faith and he’s infected a lot of the rest of us,” Clinton said. As of now, Clinton’s health remains stable, and he continues to receive monitoring at Georgetown University Medical Center.
