A Georgia father is speaking out after his 1-year-old son was allegedly beaten by a day care worker on his very first day at Little Blessings Child Care in Bainbridge. The shocking incident has left the child battered and bruised, and the worker now faces multiple felony charges.
“This is every parents’ worst nightmare,” Cory Weeks wrote on Facebook Thursday, sharing photos of his son’s injuries. “This was his FIRST DAY!!!”
According to local police, surveillance footage captured 54-year-old Yvette Thurston allegedly assaulting the toddler inside the church-based facility, which operates out of the Bainbridge Church of God in Decatur County. Authorities have not revealed the exact details of what the video showed, but the incident reportedly took place on the boy’s first day of care.
Weeks described the attack as a “tragic event that occurred to an innocent child.” He explained that while he would not disclose the specifics, the pictures of his baby spoke for themselves.
Adding to the family’s anguish, Weeks accused Thurston and the facility of dishonesty when questioned about how his son sustained the injuries. He alleged that staff initially tried to blame another child, claiming the damage came from a plastic toy.
“Questioning the incident was an inconvenience for the person in custody for the horrible acts she did,” Weeks said, adding that a pastor involved in running the center was also dismissive of their concerns.
Weeks further claimed the evidence on the surveillance tape was undeniable. “Nothing we saw was for the faint hearted, especially happening to such an innocent soul,” he wrote.
Thurston has since been charged with first-degree aggravated battery and three counts of first-degree child abuse. She was booked into jail but later released on a $44,000 bond, according to WCTV.
The boy’s father said the betrayal of trust has devastated his family. “We trusted this facility to care and love our kids and on their FIRST DAY that was violated,” he wrote. “There will be more coming from this and we will make sure nothing is ‘swept under the rug.'”
Law&Crime reported that attempts to reach the facility for comment were unsuccessful. For now, Weeks is vowing to fight for accountability while his family focuses on healing their little boy from the trauma of his very first day in child care.
