Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary this year, but their special day has been marked by tensions between the Sussexes and the Prince and Princess of Wales. In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Harry delved into the rift that emerged between the former “Fab Four” and highlighted moments of conflict that arose even on their wedding day.
One incident that stands out is a disagreement over seating arrangements at Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding. Harry revealed in the memoir that William and Kate switched place cards and changed their seats, going against the couple’s plans. He wrote, “For our part, we chipped in that we weren’t too pleased when Willy and Kate switched place cards and changed seats at our wedding.
We’d followed the American tradition, placing couples next to each other, but Willy and Kate didn’t like that tradition.” The Duke also addressed the much-reported bridesmaid dress drama involving Meghan and Kate. The media initially claimed the disagreement left Kate in tears, but in the Sussexes’ 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan said she was the one who cried.
Harry echoed this, explaining that four days before the wedding, Kate’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, tried on her bridesmaid dress and found it to be too big. Kate reportedly asked for the dress to be completely remade, but Meghan suggested it could be altered by her tailor. The confrontation left Meghan in tears, according to Harry, though Kate later apologized with flowers and a card.
Tensions came to a head during a post-honeymoon meeting between the couples at Kensington Palace. Harry revealed that Kate confronted Meghan over her “baby brain” comment, made during pre-wedding discussions after Kate had recently given birth to Prince Louis. Kate told Meghan, “We are not close enough for you to talk about my hormones.” According to Harry, this exchange led William to accuse Meghan of being “rude,” with Meghan retorting, “Take your finger out of my face.”
These moments of conflict are emblematic of the strained relationship between the two couples, with Harry and Meghan now living apart from the royal family in California. Despite these grievances, Harry’s memoir sheds light on the unresolved tensions that marred their relationship with the future king and queen.
