A Bloomington man has been arrested after allegedly slipping abortion medication to his pregnant girlfriend without her consent, causing her to miscarry in her apartment bathroom.
The McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged 31-year-old Emerson Evans of Normal with two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child. Authorities say the crime unfolded Friday evening when police were called to an apartment in South Bloomington.
According to court documents, officers arrived around 5 p.m. to find a distraught woman crying in the bathroom, where they discovered a large amount of blood. The fetus was later found in the toilet. The woman told investigators she was about seven weeks pregnant at the time.
Police say Evans admitted to pressuring his girlfriend to end the pregnancy and confessed he had given her mifepristone, a pill used in medical abortions, without her knowledge. Evans allegedly claimed he was “helping make the decision for her” and thought she was aware of what he was doing.
Investigators said Evans purchased the drug for $50 from “a girl on campus,” according to the charging documents. Evans was taken into custody and is currently being held in the McLean County Jail as he awaits a detention hearing scheduled for Monday, WEEK reported.
Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington expressed concern and sympathy in a public statement following the arrest. “We are again saddened by the alleged criminal actions which resulted in harm to others. It is my hope the mother involved in the matter fully recovers and has the resources and support of this strong community in the future.
The officers and detectives worked diligently and honorably through this very tough investigation,” he said. Under Illinois law, intentional homicide of an unborn child carries the same penalties as first-degree murder. If convicted, Evans could face a prison sentence ranging from 20 to 60 years, with the possibility of life in prison under certain circumstances.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing in coordination with the McLean County Coroner’s Office. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact Detective Brock Merritt at 309-434-2359 or bmerritt@cityblm.org

The case has sparked alarm in the community, raising difficult questions about trust, bodily autonomy, and criminal accountability in relationships.
