Abbe Lowell, the high-powered attorney who once defended Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump during the Mueller investigation, is now warning that President Donald Trump poses an unprecedented threat to the foundations of American democracy.
Speaking to The Financial Times, Lowell voiced deep concern over Trump’s ongoing attacks on the nation’s institutions, saying, “I have never been as concerned as to whether our system can withstand the pressure it is being put to,” and warning that Trump is “pushing the tree to the point that it could break.”
Lowell, 73, has long been a key figure in major political legal battles, having represented figures like Bill Clinton and Hunter Biden. But his latest alarm is directed squarely at the man who once benefited from the very system he now threatens.
In 2017, during the height of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, Lowell helped shield Kushner and Ivanka from possible criminal charges. Today, however, he says the constitutional protections that once safeguarded them are under siege by Donald Trump himself.
Lowell pointed to a quote he delivered to Congress back in 1998 during Bill Clinton’s impeachment: “The crack you put in the wall today becomes the gash tomorrow.” Reflecting on that sentiment now, he added ominously, “The wall is more than cracked, not yet crumbled.”
To fight what he calls government overreach and institutional decay, Lowell recently launched his own firm, Lowell & Associates. He claims that nine major law firms have already “buckled” under Trump-era pressure, accepting close to $1 billion in work while silencing dissent from within.
His firm is now attracting attorneys who are leaving those larger, compromised firms. Current clients include New York Attorney General Letitia James who recently won a massive fraud judgment against Trump and is now reportedly under federal investigation and DHS official Miles Taylor, who lost his security clearance after speaking out against Trump.
With a conservative-leaning Supreme Court more inclined to favor executive power, Lowell warns that legal challenges must be framed around First Amendment rights instead of simply attacking presidential authority. Otherwise, he warns, “there will just be rubble from that wall.”
