“I Did Not Create a Cocoon Around Him”: Jill Biden Fires Back at “Lady McBiden” Insults

Dr. Jill Biden is pushing back against accusations that she isolated President Joe Biden during his final months in the White House, calling out “so-called friends” who labeled her “Lady McBiden.”

Appearing with her husband on The View Thursday, the former First Lady addressed criticism suggesting she had kept the president “sequestered” to shield signs of cognitive decline ahead of the 2024 election.

“I did not create a cocoon around him,” Dr. Biden said firmly. “I mean, you saw him in the Oval Office, you saw him making speeches. He wasn’t hiding somewhere, I didn’t have him, you know, sequestered in some place.”

The criticism was fueled by a Politico report in January, which included pointed comments from filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In the piece, Pelosi compared Dr. Biden to Shakespeare’s infamous Lady Macbeth, suggesting she was protecting her husband’s legacy at the cost of transparency.

“If I was Lady McBiden, I’d put on my big girl pants, play the long game, and think about my husband’s legacy,” Pelosi told Politico.

Pelosi clarified she was speaking only for herself, but her remarks reportedly worsened an already tense relationship between the Pelosis and the Bidens. Dr. Biden reflected on that strain, telling The Washington Post, “We were friends for 50 years.”

On The View, co-host Sara Haines asked the former First Lady whether she was too emotionally involved to objectively assess her husband’s ability to serve another term.

“I was with Joe day and night,” Dr. Biden responded. “I saw him more than any other person. I woke up with him, I went to bed at night with him… so I saw him all throughout the day.”

Whoopi Goldberg also defended the Bidens, saying, “The only people that were saying” the president was mentally unfit were “people who peripherally are standing out here.”

For his part, President Biden joked, “I wish she had me sequestered,” before addressing the 2024 loss of Vice President Kamala Harris to Donald Trump. “I wasn’t surprised because they went the sexist route,” he said, pointing to racial and gender bias in the campaign against her. “They played that fairly well.”

The Bidens made clear: they’re hurt, but not backing down.
