She told RadarOnline “My search for the truth took me on a journey back to the Depp family’s roots,” Barresi stated in an interview with RadarOnline.
The investigator claims Depp, 61, portrayed his mother, Betty Sue, as the sole antagonist responsible for the family’s upheaval, while painting his father, Johnny Depp Sr., as an innocent victim. This portrayal, Barresi argues, was a deliberate tactic by the actor to draw parallels between his own victimhood and that of his father.
“Johnny’s gripping testimony highlighted Betty Sue’s aggressive, mercurial, and malevolent nature, drawing parallels to Amber,” Barresi remarked. Conversely, he alleges, Depp depicted his father as a downtrodden husband and victim, effectively resonating with the jury and furthering his narrative of victimization.
However, Barresi contends that his investigation unearthed a starkly different reality from the one presented in court. He asserts that Depp’s father played a significant role in the family dynamics and the breakdown of his parent’s marriage, a detail allegedly downplayed or omitted entirely from Depp’s courtroom strategy.
“Johnny testified that his family’s frequent relocations were primarily due to his mother’s restless nature,” Barresi noted. “While this may have been partially true, I discovered that the main reason for the constant moves was his father’s struggle to secure steady employment.”
