A Louisiana man has been formally indicted for the brutal killing of his mother, a well-loved local teacher, after allegedly stabbing her multiple times while she slept.
On Wednesday, a Caddo Parish grand jury indicted 19-year-old Connor Lyons on charges of second-degree murder in connection with the death of his 55-year-old mother, Lara Lyons. He was also indicted on additional charges of battery of a police officer and resisting an officer, according to the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office.
The case began on May 23 when deputies with the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a chilling 911 call placed by one of Connor Lyons’ siblings. “My brother killed my mother,” the caller reportedly told dispatchers.
When deputies arrived at the Lyons family home on the 6000 block of Double A Drive in Shreveport, they found Connor Lyons sitting on the back steps of the residence. Inside, they discovered Lara Lyons in her bed, already deceased.
According to investigators, Connor later confessed to stabbing his mother three times in the side of her neck as she slept. Authorities said he told them he had been hearing voices leading up to the attack.
Lyons was immediately taken into custody and booked into the Caddo Correctional Center, where he has remained since May. His bond has been set at $2 million.
The tragedy has devastated the community, especially those connected to Mansfield High School in DeSoto Parish, where Lara Lyons had been a dedicated teacher. Just days after her death, the school district issued a heartfelt statement mourning her loss.
“Ms. Lyons was a dedicated educator, a compassionate colleague, and a cherished member of the DeSoto Parish Schools family,” the district said. “Her commitment to her students and passion for teaching touched countless lives, and her absence will be deeply felt across our school community.”
Neighbors and colleagues described Lara as not only an inspiring teacher but also a kindhearted member of the community who consistently put her students first. Her sudden and violent death has left friends, coworkers, and students in shock.
Shreveport, located in northwestern Louisiana about 200 miles east of Dallas, is now the backdrop of a tragedy that has shaken both the school community and the wider parish. As Connor Lyons awaits trial, many are left grappling with how a young man could take the life of someone remembered so warmly by so many.
