Meghan Markle is shedding light on the holistic practices she turned to during her pregnancies, revealing how ancient wellness rituals helped shape her mindset and daily routine as a mother.
In the May 6 episode of her podcast Conversations of a Female Founder, the Duchess of Sussex opened up about her experience working with an Ayurvedic practitioner while she was pregnant with son Archie and daughter Lilibet. The candid conversation took place with Hannah Mendoza, founder of Clevr Blends the adaptogenic latte brand in which Meghan is an investor.
“During my pregnancies, I had an Ayurvedic doctor and so much of it was about seeing food as medicine,” Meghan, 43, explained.
The mother of two discussed how these practices helped her approach well-being in a more intentional way. She and Mendoza also spoke about the growing popularity of adaptogens plant-based ingredients known for their stress-reducing and health-boosting properties and how public perception has changed.
“I think a lot of people, when they hear mushrooms, they go ‘OK, she’s talking about being hippie-dippy…’ If you aren’t familiar with adaptogens, you can go to this place of ‘Oh, it’s feeling a little psychedelic and super woo-woo,’” Meghan said. “Somehow you say mushrooms, and now people have a connotation attached to it.”
The conversation highlights Meghan’s long-standing interest in alternative wellness, which appears to have extended to her husband as well. In Spare, Prince Harry’s 2023 memoir, he revealed that the couple’s Ayurvedic doctor recommended that Sanskrit chants be played during Archie’s birth. The doctor also encouraged the pair to whisper “I love you” to their newborn within his first minute of life.
Prince Harry also shared that he experimented with psychedelic mushrooms himself back in 2016, a revelation that added to his openness about using alternative methods to cope with trauma and emotional health.
Together, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued to explore and publicly support natural and ancient wellness practices often bridging modern skepticism with centuries-old traditions that have influenced cultures around the world.
The podcast episode is part of Meghan’s effort to spotlight female entrepreneurs and share meaningful conversations around wellness, business, and motherhood.
