A Minnesota mother accused of trying to slit her child’s throat has told authorities that she was possessed by demons who overtook her mind and body, according to official reports. Edwina Marie Stoutenburgh, 34, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder without intent and second-degree assault, following a chilling incident on Sunday morning at her home in Pennington County.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office responded after receiving an emergency call reporting that a child’s throat had been slashed. According to local outlet KVLY, Stoutenburgh’s husband dialed 911 after his wife contacted him in a state of panic, claiming that demons were commanding her to kill their children.
When deputies arrived at the scene, Stoutenburgh was reportedly standing outside the residence and was immediately placed in handcuffs. As per reports, she told deputies, “Don’t take them off.” Court documents reveal disturbing claims from the mother. Stoutenburgh told officers that she was possessed by two demons she identified as “Bondage” and “Infirmity.”
She stated that the entities had completely taken control of her actions. Authorities say she confessed that under the influence of the alleged possession, she had eaten a piece of dog feces, cut open the head of their ill duck, eaten its eye, and then showed the severed head to her children.
In a more harrowing account, she reportedly told deputies that the demons instructed her to grab a kitchen knife and cut her son’s throat in order to drink his blood. Despite this, Stoutenburgh claimed she did not want to harm her children and was acting under what she described as uncontrollable demonic influence.
She told deputies that she rolled her son over in his bed, pulled back his head, and attempted to cut his throat. However, the knife was too dull to inflict severe harm. The child sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
According to her statement, she then went downstairs to sharpen the knife but was stopped upon returning by her other children, who were visibly terrified. She attempted to drop the weapon, she said, but could not because the demons were controlling her hands. In an act of clarity, she gave her children the car keys and urged them to flee.
Stoutenburgh also told deputies that this incident marked the longest and most intense episode of demonic possession she had ever experienced. She is currently being held without bond at Pennington County Jail. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
