Within the first days of a child’s life, you’ll have to make many decisions about their health. Do you want antibiotics placed on their eyes after birth? Do you want them to receive a Vitamin K shot? Will you vaccinate them against Hepatitis A before you leave the hospital? If you have a boy, you’ll have to determine whether you want him circumcised.
Whatever you decide as a parent, the only thing you need to ensure is that these delicate procedures are performed by licensed, trained, certified medical professionals who know exactly what they’re doing. Sadly, one couple tried to perform a circumcision on their young son and it did not end well.
The procedure did not go as planned.
Tyler Wade Gibson and Bailey Alexus Gibson, a couple in Missouri, have been charged with child abuse after attempting to perform a circumcision on their child in their home. Police claim the two had no medical training to do so, People reported. The complaint explained that the “procedure did not go as planned.”
As a result, the child was taken first to Lake Regional Hospital and then to Columbia University Hospital for treatment by a urologist. A hospital employee called an emergency hotline to report that a child had “undergone a circumcision.”
Tyler Gibson claimed he conducted research before operating on his son.
As the child was being treated, the Gibsons left the hospital, against medical advice, according to People. Officers traveled to his home to question him. During the talk, Tyler Gibson admitted to performing the circumcision. He also told police he did not have the training to do so. Instead, he said he had “conducted research and prayed a blessing” before he began the procedure.
The dad explained that he placed pads to contain the bleeding, per People. He said he also sterilized the blade he used on the child’s genitals. Tyler Gibson noticed that things had gone awry when he and his wife, who assisted, could not contain the bleeding.
The Gibsons left the hospital where their son was being treated because they got tired of waiting.
Thankfully, the two took their son to the hospital when they were not prepared for the amount of bleeding and were there for four hours with him, People reported. Tyler Gibson and his wife ultimately left the hospital, claiming they got tired of waiting. The father told police he used a utility tool to cut his son. He offered instructions on where police could find the tool in his home, but they were unable to locate it.
Police arrested and charged the couple.
Both Tyler Gibson and Bailey Gibson were arrested at their home and charged with child abuse, according to KMIZ-TV. Five children were removed from the home, KOLR reported. Tyler Gibson was arraigned on December 3, and Bailey Gibson will be arraigned on January 28.
The makeshift circumcision caused the child to suffer physical injuries, according to the probable cause affidavit obtained by People. If convicted, Tyler Gibson could serve between one and seven years in prison.
