Two Arizona mothers are facing multiple charges after allegedly leaving their young children alone in a car while they went drinking at a nearby bar. The incident occurred on March 8 at the Westgate Entertainment District in Glendale, but police released body cam footage of the arrest on Thursday.

According to the Glendale Police Department, the situation unfolded around 11 p.m. when concerned witnesses spotted a small child running alone through a parking lot with no adult in sight. Upon further investigation, the bystanders found three additional children sitting inside a nearby vehicle—unsupervised.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the children and began searching the area for the parents. It took 40 minutes before two women approached, claiming to be the mothers of the children.

One woman told officers she had only stepped away to use the restroom. Both mothers insisted they had been gone for “10 to 15 minutes.”

“That’s a lie,” an officer replied, according to the body cam footage. “We’ve been standing with these kids for over 45 minutes by themselves.”

Police say both women appeared intoxicated, smelled of alcohol, and had slurred speech. They allegedly admitted to drinking at a nearby bar prior to returning to their vehicle. Officers also discovered a bag of marijuana in the glove box—within easy reach of the children.

Authorities said the children ranged in age, with one about three or four years old and two others still in car seats. In a statement, Glendale police emphasized the seriousness of the situation.

“We’re thankful to the Good Samaritans who stepped in and did the right thing,” the department said. “It’s a strong reminder: leaving kids alone—especially while under the influence—is not only irresponsible, it’s illegal.”

Both women were arrested at the scene. The children were taken to a nearby hospital by Glendale firefighters for medical evaluations.

The case has sparked outrage among local residents and renewed calls for greater accountability when it comes to child endangerment. For police and bystanders alike, the situation could have ended far worse if it weren’t for the quick action of witnesses.

As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and the charges against the mothers remain pending.
