The human body’s ability to signal underlying health issues through visible changes is profound, often manifesting clues long before symptoms escalate. Dr. Bhavini Shah, from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, stresses the significance of monitoring fingernails as a proactive health measure.

As per WalesOnline, Dr. Shah says nails can reveal crucial insights into our well-being: “It’s normal for nails to change over time… Some common and potentially serious diseases can present themselves through the appearance of your nails.” She emphasizes that noticeable changes, such as unusual textures or colors, should prompt a consultation with a healthcare professional.

Certain nail conditions serve as indicators of specific health concerns:

  • Spoon-shaped nails that curve inward may indicate iron deficiency anemia, especially common post-pregnancy.
  • Loose nails can be a symptom of hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid gland overproduces hormones.
  • Brittle nails often signal hypothyroidism, where hormone production is insufficient.
  • Red or purple lines under the nails can suggest heart disease, particularly if there’s no history of injury.
  • Clubbing, characterized by nails curving over rounded fingertips, might also indicate heart disease.
  • White nails, referred to as Terry’s nails, can be linked to liver disease, accompanied by symptoms like fatigue and yellowing skin.
  • Small dents or pits on nails are associated with skin disorders like psoriasis, eczema, or alopecia areata.
  • Horizontal ridges or Beau’s lines may appear following severe illness or infection, such as COVID-19.

Dr. Shah advises vigilance and timely medical consultation for any concerning nail changes, stressing the importance of early detection in managing underlying health conditions. Monitoring nail health can empower individuals to take proactive steps toward maintaining overall well-being.

By recognizing these subtle indicators, individuals can potentially detect and address health issues sooner, enhancing their quality of life through early intervention and appropriate medical care.
