Don’t Dismiss Kamala Harris: National Review Warns Conservatives About Underestimating the Vice President

In a thought-provoking column, Jim Geraghty of the National Review has issued a cautionary note to conservatives regarding Vice President Kamala Harris and her potential impact on the upcoming 2024 presidential election. While he acknowledges that Harris can deliver “stinkers” during impromptu speeches, he argues that dismissing her as a lightweight would be a grave mistake.

“If Kamala Harris is as stupid as her critics claim, why does she have the Democratic presidential nomination and a roughly 50–50 shot of being the first female president in U.S. history?” Geraghty questions in his piece. He emphasizes the competitive nature of Democratic politics, highlighting the numerous ambitious individuals who have strived for positions of power within the party but ultimately fell short.

Yet, he notes, Harris has successfully navigated these treacherous waters. Geraghty traces Harris’ ascent through the political ranks, pointing to the initial boost she received from her relationship with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. Although some may view this as a mere personal connection, Geraghty suggests that it speaks volumes about her ability to forge alliances and attract influential figures to her cause.

“Every ambitious Democrat in San Francisco, past and present, wants the deep pockets of the movers and shakers in their corner,” he explains. “Many try; Harris succeeded in closing the sale.” This ability to connect with power brokers, he argues, is a testament to her political acumen and ambition.

Fast-forwarding to the present, Geraghty discusses how Harris has effectively positioned herself within the Democratic Party, particularly following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race. In a remarkably short time, she has established a formidable campaign apparatus that has already raised over $1 billion. This development, Geraghty notes, further challenges the narrative of her being a hapless candidate.

“If Kamala Harris is such a hapless dunce, how does she keep getting so many other people to work around the clock to elect her?” he asks rhetorically. This question serves as a reminder that success in politics often requires more than just charisma or public speaking skills; it demands the ability to inspire others to invest in one’s vision.

Geraghty’s analysis underscores the risks of underestimating Harris as she prepares for a high-stakes election. While her critics may highlight her missteps, it’s crucial to recognize the strategic moves that have propelled her to her current position. The vice president’s journey reflects not only her ambition but also her capability to build coalitions and secure the support of powerful allies.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Geraghty’s column serves as a timely reminder for conservatives: Kamala Harris may not be a candidate to dismiss lightly. Her trajectory indicates that she possesses the skills and tenacity necessary to play a significant role in the upcoming election, making her a formidable opponent. As the race unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Harris capitalizes on her momentum and what strategies she employs to solidify her position as a leading contender for the presidency.
