Prince Harry has raised concerns about the negative impact of smartphones on today’s youth, stating that they are “stealing young people’s childhood.” During an appearance on World Mental Health Day, the Duke of Sussex took the stage alongside social psychologist Jonathan Haidt to discuss how technology affects younger generations.

In the Fortune Well video, Prince Harry’s opening remarks highlighted the issue. “In many cases, the smartphone is stealing young people’s childhood,” he said, pointing out how constant exposure to technology is affecting mental health. As a father of two, Harry’s concerns are personal, and he emphasized the broader societal impact of excessive smartphone use.

During the discussion, Harry also called out social media companies for deflecting responsibility for the growing mental health crisis among children and teens. He mentioned that these companies often “point the finger at parents” and shift the blame. “They say, ‘Well, you know, this is down to you. This is down to your parenting,’” Harry noted, criticizing the way the tech industry absolves itself of accountability.

Despite these frustrations, the 40-year-old Duke also acknowledged the complex situation parents face. Through his work with The Archewell Foundation Insight Sessions, he has come to understand that many parents feel compelled to give their children phones due to concerns about emergencies at school. “In fear of an emergency at school, parents want their children to have a phone,” Harry explained, recognizing the difficult balance parents must strike between safety and the potential harm posed by constant connectivity. told by People.

This is not the first time Prince Harry has spoken out about the dangers of technology. Just last month, he addressed the Clinton Foundation, warning about the effects of social media on children and their exposure to harmful online content. His advocacy for youth mental health and technology safety has become a recurring theme in his public appearances.

Prince Harry’s candid remarks on the harmful influence of smartphones reflect his ongoing commitment to addressing mental health challenges. By shedding light on the pressures faced by both children and parents in an increasingly digital world, he continues to push for greater accountability from tech companies and more awareness of the importance of mental well-being.
