Former Republican strategist Rick Wilson has sounded the alarm on what he describes as a desperate ploy by Donald Trump to cover up a growing internal crisis in the MAGA movement. In a fiery new column, Wilson accused the former president of falling back on the “Roy Cohn Distraction Playbook” to distract from major fractures inside his political base.
Wilson pointed to the ousting of Elon Musk as a pivotal moment. Musk, who had been serving as a “special government employee” in Trump’s administration, was reportedly forced out by Trump’s chief-of-staff, Susie Wiles. Wilson claimed her decision to push Musk out “fired the Fort Sumter shot of the MAGA civil war.”
Musk, for his part, didn’t go quietly. After his exit, he slammed Trump’s recently passed spending bill as a “disgusting abomination,” warning that it would plunge the country into “slavery” by adding $2.4 trillion to the national debt.
Trump has largely stayed silent about the growing rift, even as Musk continues his online attacks. While the former president did eventually lash out at Musk behind closed doors in the Oval Office, he has refrained from making public statements a move Wilson says is telling.
“Trump’s ‘nothing to see here’ stance on Musk is just one of many carefully-orchestrated distractions,” Wilson wrote. “From his reboot of the Term-1 travel ban, laser-targeted at brown countries, to his Biden probe it’s all transparent media manipulation.”
Wilson didn’t hold back in criticizing Trump’s handling of the political chaos. “One feud with the richest ketamine and sperm-donation enthusiast on earth, one hemorrhaging mega-bill, one geopolitical chessboard where Trump is the pawn, an economy flirting with recession, and a nuclear crisis bearing his fingerprints any single item would be a migraine,” he wrote. “Together, they’re a cluster no amount of Diet Coke and Adderall can wash away.”
He ended his analysis with a stark warning: “The distance between reality and Trump is widening, and even the credulous and slack-jawed of his followers know something is deeply, badly wrong. The vultures are circling, pecking, wondering if there are any tasty bits on the shambling corpse of MAGA.”
