Donald Trump may be eyeing a path to a third presidential term, according to his former chief strategist Steve Bannon — despite the constitutional two-term limit set for U.S. presidents.
In a new episode of the Apocalypse Now? podcast, Bannon confidently stated, “There are methods which you could do it. President Trump is going to be eligible, is going to run again, and will win again.” He added, “I will tell you, on the afternoon of the 20th January of 2029, he’s going be in the White House signing executive orders.”
Bannon’s remarks align with recent speculation sparked by the Trump campaign’s apparent promotion of merchandise emblazoned with “Trump 2028” — a subtle but telling hint at the former president’s long-term political ambitions.
While the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly limits presidents to two terms, Bannon insists Trump could find a way to challenge or reinterpret that rule. In a separate appearance on the Daily Mail podcast with David Patrikarakos, he said Trump’s desire to reclaim power stems from his belief that the 2020 election was stolen, reports the Daily Star.
“The whole reason he came back and ran again was his burning conviction that he had won in 2020, it had been stolen,” Bannon claimed. “His inner group and our audience — almost to a person, I think it’s almost 100 per cent — believe strongly to the core of their being that the 2020 election was stolen.”
Bannon, who briefly served in Trump’s White House in 2017 and spent time in prison for contempt of Congress, continues to wield influence among Trump loyalists through his daily podcast.
Outside the domestic sphere, Bannon spoke about Trump’s foreign policy strategy, particularly toward China. He praised Trump’s desire to avoid direct confrontation with Beijing. “I think President Trump’s doing what a world leader and the leader of the free world and the president of United States and our commander-in-chief should do — to show the guys respect and try to make sure that we can get some sort of accommodation,” he said.
With tensions rising globally and the 2024 election looming, the idea of a Trump 2028 campaign — constitutional or not — is already stirring debate about the future of American democracy.
