A Tennessee paramedic has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder following a dramatic 2021 incident in which he claimed to have beaten his father-in-law to death after the man allegedly shot his wife.

Matthew Konen, 35, was formally indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury for the deaths of his wife, 30-year-old Rachel Konen, and father-in-law, 62-year-old David Rodgers. The Clarksville Police Department announced the indictment in a statement posted on Facebook.

The case dates back to January 20, 2021, when Konen called 911 and reported that his father-in-law had shot his wife. During the call, Konen could be heard yelling, “My father-in-law just shot my wife,” and told dispatchers he had “pistol-whipped” Rodgers in self-defense, fearing for his own life.

Konen, who was employed at the time as a paramedic with the Nashville Fire Department, also reported that his wife was “agonally breathing” and said he was retrieving his medic bag to administer aid.

Despite his efforts, both Rachel and Rodgers succumbed to their injuries. Konen was initially arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. However, in 2023, the Nashville District Attorney’s Office dropped the charges, stating that they could only proceed if new evidence could convince a grand jury beyond a reasonable doubt.

That moment came in May 2025, when Clarksville Police Detective Kilby presented new findings to a grand jury, resulting in a sealed indictment. According to the department’s official statement, “Konen was indicted by the Montgomery County Grand Jury during its May session in connection with a 2021 double homicide involving the deaths of his wife and father-in-law.”

“No further information will be released at this time, as the case is pending prosecution,” the statement added.

Konen is now being held at the Montgomery County Jail on a $1 million bond. His case will proceed to trial following this latest development, reigniting questions surrounding the violent family tragedy and Konen’s claims of self-defense.
