A 24-year-old Texas man, Nicholas Hernandez, has been arrested for murder after allegedly shooting 31-year-old Julie Marie Butcher in the head during a road rage incident and boasting about it to friends.
The tragic events unfolded on the evening of November 8, as Butcher, a mother of four, was driving on Interstate 35. According to police, Hernandez confronted Butcher for reasons not yet disclosed, shot her in the head, and fled the scene. The gunshot caused Butcher’s car to overturn into a ditch, where she was later pronounced dead.
Hernandez’s arrest affidavit details his involvement and the critical role his own admissions played in the investigation. Authorities say he openly discussed the incident with friends, some of whom reported his confessions to law enforcement.
At least four witnesses came forward, with one claiming Hernandez asked them to dispose of two 9 mm shell casings. Another provided text messages where Hernandez allegedly described the shooting. Additionally, KSAT reported that Hernandez tried to report his Beretta 9 mm handgun as stolen just 15 hours after Butcher was killed. Investigators believe this was the same weapon used in the crime.
In a statement following Hernandez’s arrest, Butcher’s family expressed gratitude for the efforts to bring her justice. “This Thanksgiving, our family is profoundly grateful for the progress toward justice for Julie Marie Butcher,” they said, calling the arrest “an important step forward in this difficult journey” after weeks of unanswered questions.
They also shared their continued grief, saying, “While the pain of her loss is still with us, we take comfort in the dedication of law enforcement and the overwhelming support from our community. Your prayers, kindness, and solidarity have been a source of strength for us.”
Butcher, described as a beloved wife, mother, daughter, and friend, was the general manager of Papa John’s in New Braunfels. A GoFundMe campaign created in her honor has raised over $9,000 of its $10,000 goal to support her family. “She leaves behind her devoted husband, Michael Butcher, and their four precious children — Hailey, Jaxson, Michael, and Kenneth — who are now faced with an overwhelming loss,” the campaign reads.
Hernandez remains in custody at the Bexar County Jail, awaiting his initial court appearance.
