President Donald Trump raised eyebrows during a White House press briefing on Friday after showering praise on a reporter who asked a question that reinforced his claims of election interference and politically motivated legal persecution.
The exchange began when the reporter asked Trump about his previous calls for a special prosecutor. “Is there any more information on the special prosecutor?” the reporter asked, referencing Trump’s demand last week for the Department of Justice to investigate the 2020 election.
The reporter continued, “So many Americans still have questions about the 2020 election, and speaking of rogue judges, would you consider appointing somebody at DOJ maybe to investigate the judges that allowed for the political persecution of you, your family and your supporters during the Biden administration?”
Clearly pleased, Trump responded with enthusiasm: “I love you, who are you?” he said. “That’s just a very nice question, and it’s not a set-up, I have no idea who you are but I appreciate that question.”
Trump used the moment to once again assert his long-standing, false belief that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent. “I still hope for a special prosecutor to be appointed,” he said, doubling down on his claim that the election was “rigged and stolen.”
Despite Trump’s statements, there is no evidence of widespread or systematic voter fraud in the 2020 election. Multiple court rulings, independent audits, and investigations—including by Trump’s own Department of Justice—have upheld the election’s legitimacy.
Trump also repeated claims that he and his allies had been unfairly targeted by the justice system. The former president was convicted last year on felony charges related to hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. He was also indicted in two other cases—one involving his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election and another related to his handling of classified documents. However, both of those cases have since been dropped.
Trump’s warm exchange with the reporter—and his renewed calls for retribution against judges and prosecutors—highlight his ongoing efforts to reshape the political narrative around his legal troubles and 2020 loss. While his base may be energized by such rhetoric, critics argue it further undermines trust in democratic institutions and the rule of law.
