The family of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is grieving the loss of a young relative, Janie Hunt, who was among the victims of the catastrophic Texas floods that tore through a girls’ summer camp last week.

Tavia Hunt, Clark Hunt’s wife, shared a heartbreaking tribute to 9-year-old Janie in an emotional Instagram post, revealing the tragic news. The young girl was one of over 20 campers swept away when flash floods ripped through Camp Mystic in Wimberley, Texas. Officials have confirmed that the overall death toll has now reached 81, with at least 28 children among the deceased.

“Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives including a precious little Hunt cousin, along with several friends’ little girls,” Tavia wrote.

She continued by addressing the emotional and spiritual struggle of coping with such loss: “How do we trust a God who is supposed to be good, all-knowing, and all-powerful, but who allows such terrible things to happen even to children. That is a sacred and tender question and one the Bible doesn’t shy away from.

Scripture is filled with the cries of those whose hearts have been shattered, who still wrestle to trust the same God they believe allowed the pain.”

As of Monday morning, at least five campers were confirmed dead and 11 remained missing following the flash flood that struck the Christian camp. Despite the tragedy, there were moments of survival and heroism.

Among those who escaped were brothers Piers and Ruffin Boyett, who had been attending Camp La Junta in nearby Hunt, Texas. The boys described the terrifying moment they awoke to the rising floodwaters.

“I couldn’t sleep because of the lightning,” Ruffin told KSAT, while Piers recalled, “People were screaming that there was a flood. There was a lot of water.”

Ruffin said he was the first to wake around 4 a.m., followed by another camper who alerted the cabin’s counselor. The boys then quickly realized the gravity of the situation. “Oh my God, we’re floating,” Ruffin remembered.

Piers explained how the water rose to the top of their bunk beds. “We had one choice, and we had to swim out of our cabins.” The campers swam through the floodwaters and took shelter in a higher-ground cabin before being safely evacuated.

The Hunts’ loss is one among many in a tragedy that has left Texas and the nation in mourning.
