“Irrelevant to His Life and to This Country”: Prince William Unlikely to Strip Harry and Meghan of Titles, Says Expert

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have stepped down from royal duties in 2020, but they continue to carry the Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles a point of ongoing controversy among critics who believe the titles should be revoked.

Despite public pressure, King Charles reportedly has no intention of stripping the couple of their titles. However, with Prince William next in line to the throne and the brothers said to be estranged, speculation has grown over whether the Prince of Wales might take a firmer stance.

Royal expert Jennie Bond shared her perspective with The Mirror, stating that while public sentiment may support the removal of Harry and Meghan’s titles, such a move is unlikely from William.

“Granted, there seems to be a public appetite for stripping them of their titles, but I think it’s unlikely that William would choose to do this. It would seem, and in fact would be, quite vindictive,” Bond explained. “There is also the question of whether a monarch can indeed do this.”

She pointed out that the legal process to remove titles is not straightforward. “Some titles could be removed on the will of the Sovereign through an act of Parliament,” she said, suggesting that stripping royal titles is far from a simple or routine action.

Bond also addressed the current state of the brothers’ relationship, noting the deep divide that has persisted. “William may remain estranged from his brother forever, even though this would be a very sad state of affairs,” she said. “But, if he does, I think he will continue to regard Harry simply as irrelevant to his life and to this country. And I do not think he would trouble himself with taking away either of their titles.”

For now, Harry and Meghan retain their Sussex titles, though their connection to the royal family remains complicated. With no public signs of reconciliation and little indication of change from either King Charles or Prince William, it appears the titles will stay intact at least for the foreseeable future.

The possibility of healing the royal rift remains uncertain, but one thing seems clear: a royal title is easier to keep than to take away.
