Prince William and Princess Kate have expressed their sorrow following a tragic incident during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade on Monday, May 26, that turned celebration into catastrophe. A vehicle plowed into crowds on Water Street, injuring 47 people, including four children, with two sustaining serious injuries. More than two dozen victims required hospital care, according to officials cited by The New York Times.
In the aftermath, the Prince and Princess of Wales took to social media to share a heartfelt message of support. “We are deeply saddened by the scenes in Liverpool yesterday. What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and to the first responders and emergency services on the ground,” the couple posted on X (formerly Twitter), signing off with their initials, “W & C.”
Their message was joined by a public statement from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, posted on the royal family’s Instagram account. “My wife and I were deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the terrible events that took place in Liverpool on Monday. It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for so many could end in such distressing circumstances,” read the statement.
King Charles continued with a tribute to Liverpool’s spirit: “At this heartbreaking time for the people of Liverpool, I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need. Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected, and my special gratitude goes out to the first responders, emergency services personnel and other individuals who rushed to the aid of the injured.”
The royal family has a history of responding swiftly to national tragedies. After the Southport stabbings in July 2024, Prince William and Princess Kate met with grieving families and emergency crews, offering both moral and financial support to those impacted.
The Liverpool crash has left a scar on what was intended to be a moment of joy and unity. As investigations continue, the royal family’s message has become a rallying point of national solidarity and compassion in the face of unimaginable heartbreak.
